Welcome to the first Tuesday Top 5 – Top 5 Cleansing Foods
Every Tuesday I’ll be highlighting my top 5 favourite things in health and wellness. Just a little list that will hopefully inspire you or give you a few ideas to make your day a little better. Today is the top 5 cleansing foods. I’m not a fan of restrictive cleansing programs or juice fasts but if you find they work for you, go for it! I prefer to add delicious, healthy foods to my day that will help my body do the job of cleaning out whatever toxins have made it in there.
Here are a few that I love:
Lemon – Lemons are a great way to support the liver in its job as our body’s main detoxifying organ. They contain high amounts of vitamin C, a vitamin that not only supports the immune system but is also needed by the body to make an important substance called glutathione. Glutathione helps the liver detoxify harmful chemicals. Add the juice of half a lemon to water or pour it over your salad at a meal.
Ginger – Ginger is a delicious spice that also boasts anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer and antioxidant activities. Ginger is also considered one of the best detoxifying herbs and is thought to cleanse the body by stimulating digestion and circulation. Its digestive actions may serve to cleanse the build-up of waste and toxins in the colon, liver and other organs. It’s also great to sooth an upset stomach.
Blueberries. These little blue fruits are some of the most powerful healing foods. Blueberries help reduce the tissue-damaging effects of chronic inflammation, while lessening pain. Blueberries also act as antibiotics by blocking bacteria in the urinary tract, thereby helping to prevent infections.
Garlic. Eat garlic to cleanse harmful bacteria, and viruses from your body. Also eat it because it’s delicious! In my opinion you can never have too much garlic. Additionally, garlic assists with cleansing the respiratory tract by expelling mucous build-up in the lungs and sinuses. For the health benefits, choose only fresh garlic, not garlic powder, which has virtually none of the above properties.
Avocados. We rarely think of avocados as a cleansing food but these nutritional powerhouses lower cholesterol and dilate blood vessels while blocking artery-destroying toxicity. Avocados contain a nutrient called glutathione, which blocks at least thirty different carcinogens while helping the liver detoxify synthetic chemicals
